(Vicksburg) On December 16 from 12:00 to 7:00 pm, holiday joy, music, art and activities for the whole family will fill Crawford Street between Adams and Monroe Streets in downtown Vicksburg as part of the second annual Christmas on Crawford Street.  Historic properties participating in this holiday open house included the Southern Cultural Heritage Complex at the Old St. Francis Xavier Convent and Auditorium, the Balfour House, Pemberton’s Headquarters, the Baldwin House Restaurant and the Crawford Street Studios.

Historic buildings dressed for the season will be filled with special activities for all ages.   Activities include a Saint Joseph Orchestra performance, traditional art demonstrations and sale, caroling, exhibits, holiday workshops for children and adults and music.  Children may make Victorian ornaments and decorate gingerbread men along with other activities.  Traditional artists that will demonstrate and sell their goods include spinners, weavers, tatters, stained glass artists, painters, bead workers, wreath makers and traditional doll makers.  Food, refreshments and baked goods will also be available.  After the concert the festivities will conclude with the lighting of a Christmas tree and caroling.

Saint Joseph Orchestra will perform at 4 p.m. in the SCHC auditorium.  The concert will include Christmas music and holiday carols with guest vocalists on several pieces. Choirs from Vicksburg churches will join the Orchestra for songs from Handel’s Messiah.  In addition to the choirs, Dr. Clarrisa Davis (soprano) and Mrs. Karen Sanders (alto) will perform “Sheep May Safely Graze” from the Messiah with the Orchestra conducted by Mr. Louis DeVries.  Saint Joseph Orchestra is a division of the Saint Joseph Arts, Inc., a non-profit art organization formed in Saint Joseph, Louisiana in 1995 that recently received the 2000 Louisiana Governor’s Award for Outstanding Small Arts Organization.  Members of Saint Joseph Orchestra are volunteers from across the region including St. Joseph, Natchez, Vicksburg, Monroe and Winnsboro.

“It is exciting for us to participate in this second annual Christmas event,” said Ted Smith, Executive Director of the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation.  “The buildings on these blocks of Crawford Street have a fabulous history and provide a great venue for children and adults to enjoy the music, food and arts of the season.”

Admission is $5 for adults, $1 for students and free for children under age six.  Proceeds from the event will go to Haven House Family Shelter in Vicksburg. A drop box for new toys for the children at the Haven House Family Shelter will be at the Baldwin House Restaurant.  For more information, please call the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation at (601) 631-2997.
