11th Annual “Holly Days” Arts and Crafts Show, Saturday, December 1, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the historic SCH Auditorium. Admission is $2. “Holly Days” will feature a room full of quality vendors showcasing their arts and crafts, plus local talent will entertain the attendees. Lebanese Cooking with Lana Hand, Monday, December 3, 2018 from 5:30-8:00 p.m. Join us for Lebanese Cooking with Lana, a hands -on cooking experience. Baklava--a sweet dessert made with phyllo dough, pecans, and sugar; dipped in a sugar syrup. The class will also make Honey cakes--a sweet dessert made with butter and cream cheese dough and filled with pecans, honey and sugar. River Kids Free After School Art Program, November 1, 8, & 15, & 29, 2018

“More Than a Painting” Art Class with Nancy Mitchell - Thursday, November 1, 2018 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Come join Nancy Mitchell and paint a vase of Amaryllis in the style of Swedish-American Birger Sandmen. Classes suit both artists and beginners. Nancy Mitchell believes anyone can learn to draw and be creative. However, in today’s world not many people have time for weekly art classes. This class is based on a painting she designs to mimic the style of a renowned artist. The step-by-step process enables each student to recreate the painting, adding their personal style. Students also learn basics about composition and color mixing. In addition to artist facts and a touch of art history throughout the lesson, students receive a handout on the artist. The students leave with a finished art piece to hang in their home at the end of their class. Registration is $40/SCHF Members and $45/Non-Members (includes all supplies) for each class. The entertainment is provided for free and lunch can be purchased for $10 per person. Reservations are required for lunch and must be made by 5 p.m. on the Thursday before the event. These diverse musical styles are a special treat for the Vicksburg community and we hope many will embrace and enjoy the local music and local flavor Vicksburg has to offer.

Southern Book Club, November 14, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. The Southern Book Club meets the third Wednesday of each month. In November, the monthly book is Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. In Being Mortal, best-selling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: How medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending. Gawande, a practicing surgeon, addresses his profession's ultimate limitation, arguing that quality of life is the desired goal for patients and families. Gawande offers examples of freer, more socially fulfilling models for assisting the infirm and dependent elderly, and he explores the varieties of hospice care to demonstrate that a person's last weeks or months may be rich and dignified. SCHF Annual Meeting & Luncheon with guest speaker Malcolm White, Friday, November 16th at noon. Tickets are $20/person and reservations must be made in advance. Lunch will be catered by Gumbo Pot. Malcolm White leads the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC) as Executive Director. He previously held the position from 2005-2012, after which he became director of the Mississippi Development Authority’s Tourism Division. While there, White developed and implemented plans to create economic growth and opportunities through tourism, the creative economy and promoted the state as a travel destination and film location. Prior to his tenure at MAC, he worked in the hospitality industry, running a popular restaurant and founding special events and festivals throughout the state.
Additionally, SCHF is very proud to present the second annual “The Landy Teller Champion for Culture and the Arts Award” to Mike Calnan. In 2016, an anonymous gift was made in memory of Landy Teller. This gift was meant to start an endowment that would fund an award to be presented to an individual who contributes to culture and the arts in Vicksburg.

Lebanese Cooking with Lana Hand, Tuesday, November 27, 2018 from 5:30-8:00 p.m. Join us for Lebanese Cooking with Lana, a hands -on cooking experience. The class will prepare Spinach Pies--homemade dough filled with spinach, green onions, lemon juice, and olive oil. The class will also prepare Grape Leaves. 30th Annual Over the River Run (2018), Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 8 a.m. at the Old Mississippi River Bridge located at I-20 and Washington Street. This event welcomes hundreds to the City of Vicksburg and will serve as a wonderful family event. The unique run follows a scenic course heading west across the Mississippi River to Delta, Louisiana and then returns back to the finish line. The event includes a 5-mile run, 5-mile walk, and a one-mile fun run for kids. Complimentary entertainment, fun and refreshments for all runners, walkers and volunteers will follow the race in the Ameristar Delta Point parking lot. Musical entertainment will be provided by the party band, Slaphappy. Registration is open now. The entry fees are $25 for the 5-mile race, $10 for the 1-mile fun run, $75 Family pre-race registration (limit of 5), and $120 Corporate/Civic Club Team Pre-race fee (3-5 members) through October 1st. Late fees will apply to entries received after October 1st. The first 400 registered participants will receive a 30TH ANNIVERSARY LONG-SLEEVE T-SHIRT in a special goodie bag filled with specialty items from local sponsors. Early registration is strongly encouraged to secure a place at the event. Race packet pick-up will be October 12th at the SCHF Auditorium (corner of Crawford and Cherry Streets) from 10:00am-6:00pm and also the morning of the race at the race site.

Many volunteers are needed in many areas of the planning of the event. The Over the River Run is an extremely important fundraiser for the SCHF and a very special community event. After expenses, proceeds from the race will go toward the rehabilitation of the Southern Cultural Heritage Center and the many maintenance issues of the five historic buildings of the Center. Fright Night Movie Night, Thursday, October 25th, 2018 at 7 p.m. A Nightmare on Crawford Street, kicks off with Fright Night Movie Night.  Come get spooked out under the stars with a classic horror movie for adults in the courtyard. We will show the movie Fright Night. No need to worry about a babysitter, we've got you covered with a movie for the kids in the Academy building. We will be showing Monster House for the kids. Southern Book Club, September 19, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. The Southern Book Club meets the third Wednesday of each month. In September, the monthly book is The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See. In their remote mountain village, Li-yan and her family align their lives around the seasons and the farming of tea. For the Akha people, ensconced in ritual and routine, life goes on as it has for generations--until a stranger appears at the village gate in a jeep, the first automobile any of the villagers has ever seen. The stranger's arrival marks the first entrance of the modern world in the lives of the Akha people. There is no fee to attend and it is open to the public. Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest, September 24-28, 2018. The contest is open to kids ages 11-13. Admission is free and participants are required to meet September 24-28 from 3:45- 5:15 p.m. at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center. Students will be guided by art instructor Karen Biedenharn to complete their posters. Three winners will be chosen by judges for cash prizes. Posters are evaluated on the following three criteria: originality, artistic merit, and expression of the theme. All work must be original and completed only by the student participant. Southern Book Club, August 15, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. The Southern Book Club meets the third Wednesday of each month. In August, the monthly book is The Muse: A Novel by Jessie Burton. July 1967, Mayfair, London—a painting is left propped on the doorstep of the Skeleton Gallery, discovered by Odelle Bastien, a Caribbean émigré trying to make her way in London. The painting is rumored to be the work of Isaac Robles, whose mysterious death has confounded the art world for decades. The excitement over the painting is only matched by the tension around the conflicting stories of its discovery. Odelle is unsure who or what to believe as she is drawn into a complex web of secrets and deceptions. There is no fee to attend and it is open to the public. “Southern Exposure,” An All-Day Summer Camp. The camp will be held during eight weeks of the summer, from June 4 to July 27, 2018 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is open to kids ages 6-13. Early drop-off starts at 7:30 a.m. and pick-up is available through 5:15 p.m. The registration fee is $100 per child for each week. This fee includes a $25 non-refundable fee, which is due two weeks prior to each week attending. The fee includes all supplies and a daily snack. Kids are asked to bring their own lunch. During this camp, children will be “exercising mind, body, and soul” as they utilize the gymnasium, art classrooms, auditorium, gardens, and media room of the SCHC to investigate southern music, gardening, art, manners, and other camp-like activities. Experienced and accredited educator, Karen Biedenharn, will plan and oversee all aspects of the camp. Each week of camp will have a different theme!

SCHF Receives Mississippi Arts Commission Grant. The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation has been awarded a $17,400 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the $1.4 million in grants the Commission will award in 2018-2019 and will be used to continue the mission of the SCHF and bring exceptional events and quality programming to the community through artistic excellence. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. These funds are vital in supporting the River Kids free after school art program, the huge variety of concerts, workshops, lectures, exhibits and the many other events and programs that are instrumental in growing the awareness of the arts to the Vicksburg community and surrounding areas. “Let’s Dance” Vicksburg ballroom showcase, Sunday, July 15th at 2 p.m. in the SCH Auditorium. This event is free, open to the public and great fun for the entire family. The program will involve a variety of dance students performing with instructor, James Frechette. In between the demonstrations, an assortment of popular big band and jazz favorites will be played for attendees to enjoy. Each dance demonstrated will involve great music and individual costumes. The students are involved in competitions and exhibitions throughout the year. James Frechette is owner of Applause Dance Factory in Ridgeland and is the bi-monthly dance instructor at the SCHC. “Southern Exposure,” An All-Day Summer Camp. The camp will be held during eight weeks of the summer, from June 4 to July 27, 2018 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is open to kids ages 6-13. Early drop-off starts at 7:30 a.m. and pick-up is available through 5:15 p.m. The registration fee is $100 per child for each week. This fee includes a $25 non-refundable fee, which is due two weeks prior to each week attending. The fee includes all supplies and a daily snack. Kids are asked to bring their own lunch. During this camp, children will be “exercising mind, body, and soul” as they utilize the gymnasium, art classrooms, auditorium, gardens, and media room of the SCHC to investigate southern music, gardening, art, manners, and other camp-like activities. The annual Vicksburg Multicultural Arts Camp for Kids, June 18-22, 2018 from 8 a.m.-noon for ages 6-12. The registration fee is $60 per child, and includes all supplies, materials, and a daily snack. During this unique camp, children discover the art, dance, music and cuisine of three different cultures. By studying cultural differences and similarities through the arts, students will learn new artistic techniques while developing an appreciation for the traditions and customs of others. The first ever “Star Spangled Night Run in Vicksburg,” June 30, 2018, A 5K Night Run/Walk through downtown Vicksburg.  Race Results. Photos.

The 3rd Annual Raise the Roof Talent Search & Competition
Congratulations to Cameron Mathis, Grand Prize Winner, Gabby Andrews, 1st Runner Up, Noel Tello, 2nd Runner Up, and Ryne McCallum, 3rd Runner Up!
All the performances were very entertaining.
Proceeds from the contest will go to support the roof rehabilitation of the SCHF. SCHF is currently replacing roofs on two of our buildings and repairing the roof on a third building. We received a grant from the Mississippi Department of Archives & History for $145,200 for this work. We are required to raise a cash match of $36,300. We have already raised $15,480, with $20,820 to go!

Brazilian Cooking with Lou Brierley, Monday, April 23, 2018 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. There are many regional dishes in Brazil, and we will concentrate on two very different cuisines. From Minas Gerais, the class will make a Feijao Tropeiro, which is pinto beans with bacon, sausage and other ingredients. Lou will use an unexpected ingredient in the preparation of this dish. You will be surprised! Then the class will go to Bahia and prepare a Muqueca de Peixe (fish stew). Mississippi Art Colony Exhibit, March 5 through April 24, 2018. The Mississippi Art Colony was established in 1948 at the Allisons Wells Hotel in Way, Mississippi. The Smithsonian lists the Colony as the country's oldest artist-run organization of its kind. The members meet twice a year (Spring and Fall) at Camp Henry S. Jacobs near Utica, Mississippi. Every session, the Mississippi Art Colony asks the guest artist to select a show that will travel the state, representing the artists who attend. The Fall Colony 2017 Traveling Show was selected by guest artist, David Hornung. The show will be on display in the Exhibit Room at Southern Cultural Heritage Center (SCHC).
