(Vicksburg) Hunting camps are an important part southern culture.  Alan Huffman will explore the history of a deer camp in the Delta on Thursday, October 19, 2000, at 7:00 p.m. at the Southern Cultural Heritage Complex (SCHC) Auditorium in downtown Vicksburg.

Huffman’s book, Ten Point: Deer Camp in the Mississippi Delta (University Press of Mississippi, 1997) focuses on a deer camp in Issaquena County that his family visited between 1927 and 1962.   Huffman skillfully mixes the stories of deer camps and hunting with his grandmother’s vintage photographs.  A former writer for the Clarion-Ledger, Huffman currently divides his time between his research business in Jackson and writing a book on Prospect Hill Plantation to be released in fall of 2001.

The presentation is part of the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation’s (SCHF) Humanities Lecture Series, which takes place on the third Thursday of every month. The SCHC Auditorium is located at the corner of Cherry and Crawford Streets in Downtown Vicksburg.  A reception and book signing will immediately follow the lecture. The event is free and open to the public. For more information call (601) 631-2997.
